Self Portrait, 2021

I am Shane F King, a photographer in Los Angeles, California.

My work is an exploration of the mystery of sensuality, and I am currently exploring through the lens of my practice of Japanese rope bondage (Shibari). Shibari originated in feudal Japan as a method of tying criminals or hostages, with complex ties that could communicate things such as the social class of the accused or the nature of their crime. Over time it entered the Japanese public imagination as an erotic artform, much like how in the West, handcuffs and whips have become synonymous with BDSM. In my practice, ropes are not a means of “control” but rather symbolize a loving embrace and two-way connection between partners. The women in my work are all regular people with day jobs, and each are drawn to shibari for their own reasons, such as reclaiming control over their sexuality or exploring a new art form.

. He graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a degree in Studio Arts, and have has taught and shown work in Los Angeles, New York, and Tokyo.
